People in enmeshed families cannot tolerate divergent viewpoints. Members also hold each other responsible for their own feelings. If you come from an enmeshed family, you may feel overresponsible for patients and experience burnout as a consequence. Or a disagreement with a patient may upset you disproportionately.
Look back at your childhood to remember whether disparate views of reality were tolerated and accepted, also whether each member took responsibility for his or her emotions. This can help you understand your present experience of family and doctoring. Many of your patients are living in enmeshed families and social groups, and they can hold you 100% responsible for their health while dodging their own responsibility to embrace a healthy lifestyle. Understanding enmeshment can help you doctor such patients.
